On Amate Paper
Handcrafted amate paper allows me a unique exploration in each piece. It's as if the beginning were predetermined, to be revealed before my eyes. Its unique and unrepeatable textures lead me by the hand, toward the discovery of a hidden code within its fibers. The figures they contain seem to suggest the paths for the brush and color. The brush caresses its reliefs, giving depth to the color. Amate paper, preserved since pre-Hispanic times, was used to bear witness to the worldview, social organization, and scientific advancements of Mesoamerican cultures. Now, it is mostly used in artisanal forms and contemporary art creations. It is of great cultural relevance as an artistic and symbolic medium for our roots.
